Best Catamaran Hire Sydney: Prices, Boats & Inclusions

Every operator in Sydney will tell you they offer the best catamaran hire. The claim is free, so it is worth almost nothing. What actually separates one charter from another is three lines on the quote: the hourly rate, what is included in it, and what happens when the weather turns. This guide breaks down real 2026 rates across the fleet, what sits inside the price, and the six questions that separate an all-in quote from a headline rate that doubles at checkout.

At a glance

The rate range
$325–$375/hr for the smallest catamaran through $550–$750/hr for the 43-guest boat
What is included
Skipper, crew, fuel, ice, glassware, plates, cutlery, BBQ gear and water toys
Minimum hire
Three hours across the fleet; four-hour blocks are the standard booking
The catch to watch
Catering, wharf fees and extra hours are where a cheap quote gets expensive

What "best" actually means when you compare catamaran hire

Ranking operators by price is easy and mostly useless. Four things decide whether a charter is good value, and only one of them is the number on the website.

The quick test: ask for one number that covers the whole day. If the answer arrives as a rate plus four add-ons, you are comparing the wrong quote.

Catamaran hire prices in Sydney, 2026

Rates scale with capacity and deck space, not with the length of the boat. Here is where our fleet sits, from the 20-guest runabout to the flagship catamaran.

Rates sit in a band rather than a fixed number because the day and the season move them. A Tuesday in August is not a Saturday in December. As a working figure, a four-hour private charter on a mid-size catamaran lands between roughly $1,800 and $3,000 depending on the vessel, the date and the length of the run. A three-hour minimum applies to every booking, so a two-hour harbour dash is not an option.

Why the hourly rate is not the price

Every charter quote can be inflated by the same short list of extras. None of them are dishonest, but they all need to be in the comparison or the comparison means nothing.

Check these before you compare a single rate: catering and BBQ packs, wharf or berthing fees at premium pick-up points, overtime if the boat returns late, and cleaning levies on some boats. On a four-hour charter, catering alone can add more than the hourly difference between two operators.

What is included in the rate

On our charters, the hourly rate covers the boat and the crew and the boring infrastructure that keeps a day moving:

Bring your own food and drinks at no extra charge, with no corkage and no bar minimum. Pick up supplies on the way to the wharf and we will keep them cold.

Catamaran or motor yacht?

Catamaran

  • Stable at anchor, easy swim platform
  • Shallow draft gets into quiet bays
  • Open deck with shade and trampoline
  • Best value per guest up to 43

Motor yacht

  • More interior space and lounges
  • Faster point-to-point runs
  • Higher hourly rate
  • Best for formal or corporate groups

For groups up to 43 with swimming on the agenda, a catamaran wins on deck space and stability. Beyond that, a yacht like Salt carries 49 guests in a different style entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a catamaran in Sydney?

Hourly rates run from $325 to $375 for a 20-guest catamaran, $450 to $600 for the 30-guest Alila, and $550 to $750 for the 43-guest Tiger 4. A four-hour private charter typically lands between $1,800 and $3,000 depending on the vessel and the date. Skipper, crew, fuel and GST are included, and a three-hour minimum applies.

What is included in the rate?

Every charter includes a qualified skipper and crew, fuel, ice, esky space, glassware, plates, cutlery and BBQ gear, plus paddleboards, noodles, a floating lilypad and a Bluetooth sound system. Alila also carries Starlink WiFi. BYO food and drinks come at no extra charge.

Can we bring our own food and drinks?

Yes. Every charter is BYO with no corkage fee and no bar minimum. We supply the ice, esky space and glassware, and you can pick up supplies from a bottle shop near the departure point on the day.

How many guests fit on a catamaran?

Our catamarans carry 20, 30 and 43 guests depending on the vessel. The 49-guest Salt is a motor yacht rather than a catamaran, and it suits formal groups wanting interior space.

How far ahead should we book?

Two to four weeks ahead for weekend charters, and further out for peak season from October to March. New Year's Eve and Australia Day sell out months in advance. Weekday charters can often be arranged at shorter notice.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain rarely stops a charter, and the boats are covered. If conditions are unsafe the skipper makes the call, and we reschedule or credit the booking rather than send a group out into a rough harbour.
