Birthday Party Catering on a Boat: Menus, BYO & Catering Packages
Birthday party catering on a Sydney Harbour catamaran gives you three options: fully BYO (flat $150 fee on the catamarans with no corkage on drinks), platter and BBQ add-ons, or full catered service with a host. Bring your own food, drinks and birthday cake, or let the team arrange the menu for you. Current rates and availability should be confirmed when enquiring.
Birthday party catering on a boat is one of the most common questions we get at Experience Sydney Harbour. Whether you're planning a 30th, a 50th, or just a big get-together with friends, the food and drinks can make or break the day. The good news is that a Sydney Harbour catamaran charter gives you more flexibility than any land-based venue: you can BYO your own food and drinks on most vessels, arrange full catering with a host, or do something in between. This guide covers every catering option available for your birthday party on the water, from BYO tips to plated menus, so you can choose the approach that fits your group and budget.

Your Three Catering Options for a Boat Birthday
Every birthday party charter with Experience Sydney Harbour can be catered one of three ways. The right choice depends on your group size, how much effort you want to put in, and your per-head budget. Here's how each option works.
1. Fully BYO (Self-Catered)
Bring your own food, drinks, cake and ice. On the catamarans (Alila, What's Kraken, Tiger 4) you pay a flat $150 BYO fee that covers biodegradable plates, cups, cutlery, napkins, platters, BBQ gear, onboard eskys and use of the 16-speaker stereo. No corkage on drinks. This is the most popular option for birthday parties because it keeps costs predictable and lets everyone bring exactly what they like.
2. Platters & BBQ Add-On
If you'd rather not coordinate all the food yourself, we can arrange gourmet platters (antipasto, cheese, fruit, sandwiches) or a BBQ package cooked onboard. You still BYO your own drinks with no corkage. The team can coordinate the catering order for you, or you can use the catering menu available on our catering page to choose what suits your group.
3. Full Catered Charter with Host
For a hands-off celebration, opt for full catering with a dedicated host who serves food and drinks throughout the charter. This is ideal for milestone birthdays where you want to relax and enjoy the day rather than manage logistics. Full catering menus include canapes, plated mains and dessert options. Available on all vessels including the Salt superyacht.
Which Vessel Suits Your Birthday Catering Plan?
The boat you choose affects how your catering works — especially around BYO fees and onboard facilities. Here's a quick comparison of the fleet for birthday party catering.
| Vessel | Max Guests | BYO Drinks | BYO Fee | Onboard Facilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alila — Seawind 1160 | 30 | Yes, no corkage | $150 flat | BBQ, eskys, platters, 16-speaker stereo, trampoline nets |
| What's Kraken — Seawind 1000 | 20 | Yes, no corkage | $150 flat | BBQ with utensils, eskies, crockery, cutlery, cups |
| Tiger 4 — Catamaran | 43 | Yes, no corkage | Included | BBQ facilities, large eskies, sound system |
| Salt — Superyacht | 49 | Yes (fees apply) | $10pp food + $25pp drinks | Full galley, waitstaff, swim platform, premium catering packages |
Current rates and availability should be confirmed when enquiring. The catamarans offer the simplest BYO setup with a flat fee and no per-head corkage, while the Salt superyacht provides a premium full-service experience with professional crew and catering packages.
ALILA — Seawind 1160 Catamaran
The most popular birthday party boat on Sydney Harbour. Up to 30 guests, a $150 flat BYO fee with no corkage, BBQ facilities and a 16-speaker stereo for your birthday playlist.

If you're going the self-catered route, a little planning goes a long way. Here's what to pack for a smooth birthday party on Sydney Harbour.
- Food: pre-prepared platters, finger food, salads in sealed containers and anything you can cook on the onboard BBQ
- Drinks: bring your own beer, wine, spirits and mixers — eskys and ice space are provided on the catamarans
- Birthday cake: candles are fine, just let the skipper know so they can help you find a sheltered spot
- Ice: BYO ice to keep everything cold throughout the charter
- Decorations: banners, balloons and table decorations are welcome — just nothing that damages the vessel
- Reusable water bottles: stay hydrated, especially on warm days
- Music: connect your phone to the onboard Bluetooth sound system and curate your birthday playlist
- Sunscreen & warm layers: the harbour breeze can change quickly, so pack for both
Plan Your Birthday Catering in 4 Steps
Pick Your Catering Style
Decide between fully BYO, platters and BBQ add-on, or full catered with a host based on your group size and budget.
Choose Your Vessel
Match the boat to your group: Alila for up to 30, Tiger 4 for larger groups up to 43, or Salt for a premium experience up to 49.
Coordinate the Menu
If you're using catering, download the menu from our catering page and confirm your order. If BYO, start your shopping list early.
Confirm & Enjoy
Send your enquiry with date, group size and catering preference. The team will confirm the vessel, rate and catering arrangements.
Pro tip: coordinate a food drop-off
If you're doing BYO but don't want to carry everything onboard yourself, ask about the food and drinks pick-up service from Rose Bay. For a fee, the crew can collect your catering order and have it ready on the boat when you arrive — a lifesaver when you're wrangling 20 guests and a birthday cake.
Catering Costs at a Glance
Here's a rough breakdown of what to budget for catering at your birthday party on Sydney Harbour. These are indicative costs — confirmed pricing depends on your vessel, group size and menu selections.
- BYO fee (Alila & What's Kraken): $150 flat — covers all plates, cutlery, BBQ gear, eskys and stereo use
- BYO fee (Tiger 4): included in your charter rate
- BYO fee (Salt superyacht): $10 per person for food + $25 per person for beverages (minimums apply)
- Platter & BBQ catering: priced per head based on menu selection — see the catering menu for current options
- Full catered with host: premium per-head pricing includes canapes, mains, dessert and dedicated service
- Wharf fees: $50 per wharf ($100 minimum) — some birthday party charters include wharf fees in the package
- Food/drinks pick-up (Rose Bay): optional add-on fee for crew to collect your BYO order
Current rates and availability should be confirmed when enquiring, as seasonal pricing and package inclusions vary.
Milestone Birthdays: Catering Ideas That Work on the Water
Different milestone birthdays call for different catering approaches. Here are some ideas that have worked well for our charter guests.
30th Birthday
Go for a party vibe: BYO drinks, a BBQ station, and a grazing platter to keep everyone fed. Connect your playlist to the stereo, bring balloons and decorations, and plan a swim stop in a sheltered bay. Alila is ideal with room for 30 guests and the trampoline nets for lounging.
40th Birthday
A step up in style: consider platter catering with antipasto and cheese boards, plus a signature cocktail or two. A 4-5 hour charter gives you time for a sunset cruise after the food. Tiger 4 offers more deck space for larger groups, or Alila for an intimate 30-person celebration.
50th Birthday & Beyond
Full catering with a host is the move here. Canapes and plated service let you and your guests relax completely. The Salt superyacht delivers a premium experience with professional crew and waitstaff for a truly milestone celebration on Sydney Harbour.
Can You Bring a Birthday Cake Onboard?
Absolutely — birthday cakes are welcome on all our vessels. Candles are fine too; just let your skipper know so they can help you find a sheltered spot away from the wind. For larger cakes, make sure you have a flat surface for serving (the cockpit tables on the catamarans work well). If you're using full catering, ask the team about adding a birthday cake to your catering order.
Drinks: How BYO Works on the Water
One of the biggest advantages of a catamaran birthday party is the BYO drinks policy. On Alila, What's Kraken and Tiger 4, you bring your own beer, wine, spirits and mixers with zero corkage. The $150 flat BYO fee (on Alila and What's Kraken) includes glassware, eskys and ice space. On the Salt superyacht, BYO beverages are $25 per person with catering and beverage packages also available.
- Bring your own ice to keep drinks cold for the full charter
- Eskys and cool storage are provided — just load them up at departure
- Glassware is included on the catamarans, so no need to bring your own
- No corkage means no per-bottle fees — bring what you want
- On Salt, BYO beverages are $25 per person (fees apply)
